As I sat there on my porch, listening to the rhythmic sound of rain hitting the ground, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the mix of emotions that Christmas brings. It's a time of joy and togetherness but also a season that makes us pause and reflect on the ones we've lost and the struggles we've endured. My father and grandmother are always at the forefront of my thoughts during the holidays. Their absence is a void that no amount of twinkling lights or cheerful songs can fill.
Still, as I looked at the Christmas decorations around me, I found comfort. Even the tackiest decoration reminded me that beauty and happiness can be found in the smallest things. Decorating my home for Christmas has become more than just a tradition—it's a way of creating an environment that sparks joy. It's a reminder to focus on what's here and now: my children, my husband, and the little moments that make life special.
Seeing my children's faces—my son with my father's unmistakable features (he has his whole face) and my daughter looking like a perfect little chocolate porcelain doll—filled me with an indescribable sense of gratitude. In them, I see the legacy of my loved ones who have passed on. In these moments, these reflections, I realize how much I truly have to be thankful for.
But Christmas also makes me deeply aware of the hardships others face.
As I sit in the warmth of my home, I think about those who don't have a roof over their heads, who are out there in the cold and rain without shelter. I think about those who don't have the comfort of family or a warm bed to retreat to when they're unwell. This awareness breaks my heart but also makes me profoundly grateful for what I have—a home, a family, and the ability to provide stability and safety for my children.
The holidays can stir up many emotions—both joyful and sorrowful. While it's okay to feel sad or nostalgic, I also believe it's important to honor those feelings by channeling them into gratitude and action. Whether that means giving back to others, spending extra time with loved ones, or simply pausing to reflect on the blessings in our lives, there's power in choosing to focus on what's good, even amidst the challenges.
As we count down to Christmas, I hope we can all take a moment to appreciate what we have, cherish the ones we love, and hold close the memories of those who are no longer with us. Let's decorate, laugh, cry, and find the beauty in the small things—because that's what the season is truly about. It's a time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and hold hope for the future. And maybe, just maybe, we can bring a little light into the lives of others along the way.
If you’re finding it hard to keep your spirits up this Christmas, here are ten practical tips to help you embrace the beauty of the season while staying emotionally balanced:
Lean Into the Joy of Traditions
Even small traditions, like hanging ornaments, baking cookies, or watching your favorite holiday movie, can bring comfort and nostalgia. These rituals help anchor us in the present while honoring the past. My father insisted on a real Christmas tree every year because the smell reminded him of his grandmother. His very last Christmas, we found the most beautiful blue spruce tree. I will always have that memory in my heart.
Stay Active and Get Outside
Physical activity, even a short walk, can improve your mood by releasing endorphins. Step outside to enjoy the crisp air or admire your neighborhood's Christmas lights if the weather permits. Nature and movement have a way of resetting the mind.
Connect With Loved Ones
Reach out to family and friends, even just a quick call or video chat. Sharing memories, laughs, and stories can make you feel more connected and supported, especially during difficult moments.
Practice Gratitude
Start or continue a gratitude practice by jotting down three things you're thankful for each day. They can be as simple as a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or the smile on a loved one's face.
Give Back
Helping others is one of the best ways to lift your spirits. Volunteer at a local shelter, donate to a food bank or buy small gifts for those in need. Acts of kindness can fill your heart with purpose and joy.
Limit Stressful Activities
As soon as December 1st hits, everyone is having a party. It's okay to say no to commitments that feel overwhelming. Focus on what truly brings you happiness, and don't feel pressured to do it all. Simplify your holiday plans if needed.
Create a Cozy Space
Set up a corner in your home with things that comfort you, like a soft blanket, a scented candle, or a favorite book. A peaceful space to relax can help you recharge.
Focus on Self-Care
Take time for yourself—whether it's a hot bath, journaling, or meditating. Prioritizing your well-being is essential during a season that can be emotionally and physically demanding.
Seek Help When Needed
If feelings of sadness or depression become overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek support from a therapist or counselor. Talking to a professional can provide tools to help you manage your emotions.
Keep the Memories Alive
Honor the memory of loved ones by incorporating their favorite traditions into your holiday. Whether making a special recipe or playing their favorite song, this can help you feel connected to their spirit.
The holidays are a time to cherish the beauty around us, big and small. By embracing gratitude, practicing kindness, and finding ways to bring joy to ourselves and others, we can keep our spirits bright—even when the rain clouds roll in.
With gratitude and a dash of courage,
